If taking a hot air balloon is on your bucket list, then be sure to take advantage of the balloon safari offered in the Serengeti, and you will not be disappointed. Floating over the Serengeti in a hot air balloon is both exhilarating yet peaceful, and it will provide you will a unique perspective of the beauty offered in the expansive lands. WARNING, a balloon safari might not be ideal if you are afraid of heights, but then again, what better way to face your fears than floating more than 1000 feet above the most beautiful sights in nature!
The balloon safari experience begins before dawn and gives you the opportunity to witness nocturnal animals as you make your way from camp to the launch site. One animal you may catch a glimpse of outside of the water, is a hippo, as the morning temperatures are typically cooler versus the heat of a typical day.
Arriving at the the launch site, you will get to watch the balloon fill up with air, as the sun begins to rise. You will climb into the basket of the balloon, and lie horizontally, as the balloon begins to inflate, slowly transitioning to a more relaxed, vertical position. At first this could be a little nerve wracking, however, but once you are propped upright, the excitement begins. Before you know it, the hot air balloon will begin to elevate and you will get to enjoy a spectacular, aerial view of the enormous Serengeti.
Observing the wild life through a safari jeep is an incredibly special experience, however taking a hot air balloon safari is unique in the sense that you can see the animals from a different perspective and notice aspects you might not necessarily see from land. Watching the great wildebeest migration does not only let you track where they are going, but you can see the trail they left behind. Scanning the trees for cats is especially fun as the balloon can float right along or above the trees. You might even get eye level with a resting lion or leopard hanging out in an acacia tree. There is so much to take in, and the aerial view allows you to observe lions, cheetahs, leopards, buffalo, elephants, giraffes and much more, in every direction. Despite the vulnerability of floating in a balloon over the wild, the height produces an illusion that the animals are moving in slow motion along the savannah, giving you a true sense of calmness and presence.
The descent of the balloon was as calculated and easy as the ascent. Our guide was very knowledgeable and engaging as he taught us all about the interesting history of Serengeti as well as the the history of hot air balloon. Once you land, there will be a surprise awaiting, which you will have to take one of these spectacular rides to experience for your self. It was a truly magical day and unique experience. Proud African Safaris would be happy to incorporate a balloon safari into your adventure. For more information, check out Serengeti’s premier balloon safari host at www.balloonsafaris.com
